Route : Delhi - Leh - Indus Valley - Zingchen - Rumbak - Leh - Delhi

As winter approaches and snow begins to fall on the upper reaches of the Himalayas, food becomes scarce, and herbivores begin their annual migration. These animals search for sustenance in the surrounding on grassy slopes and luxuriant valleys. Among them is a Himalayan wild sheep known as the Bharal or Blue Sheep. Found throughout the high Himalayas, the Bharal is a magnet for the animal world’s most mysterious killer!
Predators are territorial animals, but under exceptional circumstances, they have to shift base! Sub-zero temperatures send Bharal to seek food and warmth below the tree- line, and its hunter has to follow it for its survival! In the icy winter months, from high peaks and ridges, the Bharal’s nemesis, the grey ghost of the Himalayas – the Ounce makes its spooky appearance in the lower valleys! AND… *This is truly the best time to track it down!
The Indian population of the Snow Leopard is estimated to be around 500 -600, and our quest for this feline phantom will take us to the Hemis National Park, a 4000 sq. km high altitude zone that is prime Snow Leopard country. Hemis has the potential to support nearly 200 leopards, but the actual numbers must be less than half. In spite of inhospitable terrain, the area has a small human population that lives here, tending its livestock. The valleys, ridges, and peaks of Hemis occasionally turn into a battleground, as man and animal clash in a struggle for survival, and the “ghost” is often persecuted for stalking and killing domestic animals.
Hemis National Park is also the only refuge of the Shapu, another species of a rare wild sheep inhabiting the Indian Himalaya.

Day 03; Leh: visit Monasteries, stupas, and palaces of Leh

This morning after leisurely breakfast, we proceed for our visit, which will also help us to acclimatize further. The day is dedicated to the tour of Leh – exploring on foot.
The walk starts with the climbing of the steep stairs or take the gentler 4x4 track to the Shanti Stupa, which provides an opportunity to survey the city in its entirety. The Indus river, the Zanskar peaks, provides a suitably dramatic backdrop.
We will then head down to the calming, the atmospheric 16th-century monastery Sankar Gompa, belonging to the Buddhist Gelukpa sect offers a peaceful place to relax. In continuation, we walk uphill to the Namgyal Tsemo Monastery, founded in 1430 by the King Tashi Namgyal.
We wind up the tour by dropping down an uneven spiral trail down the imposing and opulent Leh Palace and on to the old town as the path passes through narrow lanes back to our hotel.

Day 04: Leh- Excursion through the Indus Valley

This morning after breakfast, we set out to see some of the monasteries and palaces in the Indus Valley.
Our first stop is at the imposing Stok Palace, which was built in the mid 19th century after the King was dethroned by the Dogra forces and forced to vacate the Leh Palace. We will visit the Palace Museum.
After this, we proceed to Shey Palace - the summer palace of the erstwhile Raja of Leh. Set upon a hill, and housing the largest golden topped victory stupa, the monastery has a two-storey statue of the sitting Buddha wrought with copper and gold of breathtaking grandeur. Many chortens can be seen in front of the building.
Thiksey Gompa Monastery, which is our next stop, looks similar to Lhasa’s Potala Palace. The Gompa is known for imposing structures and offers awe-inspiring views of the green Indus Valley, if looked atop a hill from the vantage point. The monastery has several chambers which are full of sacred thankhas, stupas and statues. The library here is among Ladakh’s biggest ones and around 60 lamas live here.
The day ends with our visit to the Hemis Gompa, built in the 17th century by King Singge Namgyal and ever since has enjoyed the patronage of the royal family. There are few gold statues and few stupas which are adorned with precious stones. The gompa also has an incredible collection of sacred thankhas which also include one thankha which is considered to be the largest to exist and is shown once in every 12 years.
